The items above will help people through a hurricane, blizzard, tornado, earthquake, forest fires, mud slides, and floods. It gives you what you have to have when your cut off from the World,  and the comforts of home. A insurance policy of sorts to help you stay alive when disaster strikes. Not for the long term, but just enough stuff to insure your safety till you can get out of the situation at hand.

If you build your own survival kit keep in mind the area you live in. Meaning snowshoes are useless in my area, but you would need them in Alaska. Snake leggins may be useless in Alaska, but in Freer, Texas between May and October a definate need. So use a little common sense folks. I will do my best to have information here for you, but it by no means covers everything. Get yourself the SAS survival guide at a bookstore.

Get to know your local plants, what you can eat that grows in the wild. Cat tail root for example is a starch, just like potatoes. Willow tree bark and leaves are like Bayer asperin. Most bugs with less than 8 legs can be eaten, however some like stinkbugs are to be avoided. Water needs to be filtered, boiled, or chemicals added before you drink it. Information like this can help you more than any equipment or supplies.
